EDO STATE TEAM TOP SOUTH SOUTH / SOUTHEAST RUGBY LEAGUE

Rugby history was made over the weekend in Asaba Delta State by the present board of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation led by Mr. Kelechi Mbagwu with the kick off of the newest league in the country – the South-South / South-East Zonal Rugby League.

According to the Technical Director of the Rugby Federation, Mr. Ntiense Williams “We are highly excited with the coming on board of the South-South / South East Rugby League into the National Rugby League Program”

Said he, “This Rugby League which consist of four teams from Abia, Edo, Warri & Delta respectively is coming on board the National Rugby League in addition to the initial Lagos Rugby League and the Northern Rugby League which has two groups. This makes a total of 21 Rugby Clubs participating in the 2018 National Rugby League from its initial 12 teams. Almost doubling the number of participating teams!”

The August event which took place at the Sports Club of Government House in Asaba Delta State witnessed three Matches on the day.

According to the Chairman of the South-South / South-East Zonal League, Mr. Obum Dike, “The first match saw RocketBull Rugby Football Club of Edo State defeat their Warri Wolfs Rugby Football Club counterpart by 23 points to nil. The host Delta Force Rugby team beat the East Of The Niger Rugby Team by 7 points to nil in the second match of the day”

Meanwhile, the there was also a 10-A-Side Friendly Women Rugby match between Abia Female Rugby team and the host Delta Female Rugby team which sparked off lots of excitement in the premises. The thrilling women rugby encounter ended in favor of the Abia ladies courtesy of a beautiful last minute Try by NWANKWO UJUNWA CAROLINE who made a last minute dash to score for her team in a rugby match which was full of crunchy tackles and beautiful display of free-flowing rugby artistry.

With these first matches of the South-South / South East Rugby League played over the weekend, RocketBull Rugby Club of Edo State is presently topping the table with 4 points. Delta Force Rugby team is in the second position also with 4 points but lesser points difference.

The East Of The Niger Rugby Team is in 3rd position with 1 bonus point, while Warri Wolf Rugby Club is yet to secure a point in 4th position.

The next match is scheduled for 14 July 2018 to be hosted in Warri.
